There are only two plant-based sources of GLA enriched oils: borage and evening primrose, which have a maximum of 22% GLA. Omega-6 GLA enriched oil can carry up to 50% GLA, which provides many advantages for skin health.
Both oral and topical administration of GLA has been effective in reducing the symptoms of a large number of skin disorders including dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and acne as well as reducing redness and erythema due to UV radiation and improving healing of wounds.

Cetyl palmitate is used as an emollient for topical products. It is also used as an emulsion stabilizing agent in shampoos, and as an emulsifying agent and viscosity-increasing agent in various lotions and creams. Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides are commonly used in skincare products due to their emollient properties. They help to moisturize and soften the skin, leaving it smooth and supple. The mechanism of action in skin care involves the formation of a protective barrier on the skin's surface, preventing moisture loss and improving skin hydration. Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides are also used in the fragrance industry as a carrier oil for essential oils and aromatic compounds. It helps to enhance the longevity and diffusion of fragrances, allowing them to be released gradually over time. The mechanism of action in fragrance involves the solubilization and dispersion of aromatic molecules, ensuring a consistent scent experience.
Medium-chain triglycerides have been used in a variety of pharmaceutical formulations including oral, parenteral, and topical preparations. In oral formulations, medium-chain triglycerides are used as the base for the preparation of oral emulsions, microemulsions, self-emulsifying systems, solutions, or suspensions of drugs that are unstable or insoluble in aqueous media, e.g. calciferol. Medium-chain triglycerides have also been investigated as intestinal absorption enhancers and have additionally been used as a filler in capsules and sugar-coated tablets, and as a lubricant or antiadhesion agent in tablets.

MCT oil is widely used in cosmetics due to its benefits. It provides light and deep hydration without the greasy feeling, allowing it to adapt to all skin types. It is quickly absorbed and does not clog pores, making it ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. Its natural antibacterial properties also help fight bacteria responsible for acne and skin infections. The anti-inflammatory properties make this oil suitable for eczema products. MCT oil can be used as a demaculator and in various oil formulations.

Stearic acid is mainly used in oral formulations as a tablet and capsule lubricant (1-3%) or as the hardening agent in glycerin suppositories. Although it may also be used as a binder or in combination with shellac as a tablet coating as well as in enteric tablet coatings and as a sustained-release drug carrier. In topical formulations, stearic acid is used as an emulsifying and solubilizing agent (1-20%). When partially neutralized with alkalis or triethanolamine, stearic acid is used in the preparation of creams. The partially neutralized stearic acid forms a creamy base when mixed with 5-15 times its own weight of aqueous liquid, the appearance and plasticity of the cream being determined by the proportion of alkali used.
Stearic acid also can be used in the production of stable nanoparticles for various topical and oral formulations (emulsions, oral liquids, creams, gels).
Higher intakes of odd-carbon fatty acids, such as C15:0, have been linked to lower mortality in some studies by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as it may help lower total cholesterol and glucose levels while improving insulin sensitivity. Some studies also suggest a lower risk of certain cancers with higher C15:0 levels. Pentadecylic acid is thought to help improve liver health biomarkers such as lower alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, which have been linked to a lower risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Pentadecylic acid has potential longevity benefits: it activates AMPK and inhibits mTOR, which are key components of human longevity pathways. It also shares some activities with known lifespan-extending compounds such as rapamycin. At the cellular level, C15:0 may help strengthen cells and restore mitochondrial function.

Argan oil is widely used in cosmetics. It helps moisturize and nourish the skin, improving hydration and elasticity while preventing premature aging. Glyceryl monooleate is a polar lipid that swells in water to give several phases with different rheological properties. It is used in topical formulations as an emollient and as an emulsifying agent for water-in-oil emulsions. It is also a stabilizer for oil-in-water emulsions. Glyceryl monooleate gels in excess water, forming a highly ordered cubic phase that can be used to sustain the release of various water-soluble drugs. It is also the basis of mucoadhesive drug delivery systems. Glyceryl monooleate is reported to enhance transdermal and buccal penetration and it has been investigated in inhalation delivery systems. Glyceryl monooleate has been investigated for the encapsulation of drugs in liquid crystalline nanoparticles for the entrapment of drugs for oral and ocular delivery.
Heptadecanoic acid is naturally present in full-fat dairy and some meats, but modern dietary trends (e.g., low-fat diets) may lead to lower consumption. Supplements help reintroduce this potentially beneficial fatty acid. Higher levels of C17:0 are associated with lower risks of cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes. It may help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. In some studies C17:0 supplementation has been linked to reduced inflammation and it may help lower triglyceride levels, which is a key factor in atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries). Emerging research suggests saturated fatty acids like heptadecanoic acid may play roles in brain health, possibly by supporting the integrity of cell membranes in neurons.
Heptadecanoic acid supplementation might help in treating or preventing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It may help in treating hyperferritinemia (excess iron storage) without requiring phlebotomy. Heptadecanoic acid has been shown to possess antimicrobial.
