SMEY, the Franco-German TechBio company pioneering cultivated oils through precision fermentation, today announced the launch of Lipid Atlas, a proprietary lipid discovery platform built on its Neobank of Yeasts (NOY). The launch follows strong commercial traction in the beauty sector and increasing demand from food manufacturers seeking scalable, deforestation-free alternatives to tropical lipids.
This milestone marks the next step in SMEY’s industrial strategy: transforming its unique biological and data infrastructure into a scalable lipid innovation platform for multiple industries.
Following the July 2025 announcement of NOY, the world’s first Neobank of Yeasts, SMEY has expanded its internal discovery capabilities under the leadership of Dr. Heykel Trabelsi. Lipid Atlas compresses discovery timelines from years to weeks by solving two critical challenges in the ingredient industry: selecting the right lipid profile and rapidly scaling new ingredients for industrial production.
The development of Lipid Atlas builds on SMEY’s successful collaborations with leading European beauty brands, where the company’s cultivated oils have demonstrated superior sensory performance, oxidative stability, and supply predictability. In particular, ingredients such as Noyl SilkTM have shown strong formulation compatibility and a distinctive dry sensory profile in cosmetic applications.
At the same time, growing interest from food and confectionery manufacturers is accelerating SMEY’s cross-industry expansion. This momentum follows the company’s participation in FI Europe in Paris (December 2025) and ISM Cologne (February 2026), where SMEY presented its cultivated cocoa butter equivalent, Noyl CocoaTM. Food brands are actively seeking scalable, non-GMO cocoa butter alternatives that reduce exposure to tropical sourcing volatility, geopolitical instability affecting global supply chains, and emerging regulatory pressures such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
From Beauty Validation to Cross-Industry Expansion
SMEY’s first wave of commercial validation has come from high-performance cosmetic applications, where fermented oils such as Noyl Silk have demonstrated strong oxidative stability, a dry sensory profile, and excellent compatibility with existing formulations.
This validation phase is now accelerating the industrial deployment of SMEY’s broader lipid portfolio, enabling applications across beauty, food, and specialty ingredients.
Through its French headquarters and German laboratory located at the Innovation and Start-up Center for Biotechnology (IZB) in Munich, SMEY already supports partners in evaluating 5–10 g discovery samples within one month, with the capability to scale production to 1–10 tons per month shortly thereafter.
From Neobank of Yeasts to Lipid Leadership
NOY (Neobank of Yeasts) represents a proprietary living library combining biology and data. Integrated with SMEY.AI predictive models, it reduces lipid discovery timelines from years to weeks.
With the launch of Lipid Atlas, SMEY positions itself not only as a cultivated-oil producer but also as a biointelligence platform enabling lipid discovery and scalable production.
“Lipid Atlas isn't just a database; it is an industrial engine,” said Pavel Elizarev, Chief Scientific Officer at SMEY. “By combining the biological diversity of our Neobank of Yeasts with AI-driven discovery, we provide the missing link: the data to identify the lipid profiles industry needs and the biotechnology to produce them ethically, locally, and at scale.”
About SMEY
SMEY is a Franco-German AI-enabled TechBio company producing cultivated oils and fats through fermentation. Headquartered in Paris, with R&D in Munich, SMEY combines advanced biotechnology and data science to create high-performance, deforestation-free ingredients for beauty, food, and industrial applications.
At the core of SMEY’s technology is NOY, the world’s first Neobank of Yeasts, a private collection of more than 1,000 non-GMO species enabling scalable and ethical lipid production. Its flagship cosmetic ingredient, Noyl Silk™, won the Cosmetic 360 2025 Award in Paris in the Manufacturing Process category.
Produced without farmland and with zero deforestation impact, SMEY’s oils help brands build resilient, future-proof supply chains.
